Sheep and Goat Production

About this Course

Sheep and goats (small ruminants) form an important economic and ecological niche in the agricultural systems. They form an integral and important component of the pattern of animal production in most rural communities. Sheep and goats are mainly kept for immediate cash source, milk, meat, wool, manure, and saving or risk distribution. They significantly contribute to the socio-economic life of many rural, peri-urban and urban poor households through provision of income, animal protein and intangible benefits (i.e., savings, an insurance against emergencies, cultural and ceremonial purposes). Small ruminant (sheep and goats) enjoy a wider distribution and greater flock dynamism than other livestock species within Africa.

In 2011, the sheep and goats population in Nigeria was estimated to be 38 million and 57.3 million respectively. The greater proportion of these animals are however, largely concentrated in the northern region of the country than the southern region.

The small size and relatively low cost of production make them a unique resource suited to the limited resource base of many households. Sheep and goats are one of the major contributors of animal proteins for human consumption in Nigeria. It is ranked as the second most important suppliers of meat protein to the population after cattle and they contribute about 35% of the total animal meat production in Nigeria.
